Most of us experience shoulder pain or arm pain (referred to from the shoulder) at some point in our lives. It is one of the most common musculoskeletal problems after back and neck pain.

Shoulder problems come in different varieties and they can be referred to as tendinopathy, tendinitis, rotator cuff damage, impingement syndrome, frozen shoulder, osteoarthritis or transferred pain from the neck. Even so, it is often difficult to find a precise cause of the pain. It is due to the complex construction of the shoulder, the close connection with the neck and biopsychosocial factors. In many cases, X-rays, ultrasound scans and MRI scans also do not provide a precise explanation of the cause and severity of the injury. A good clinical examination will therefore be appropriate to understand the extent of the problem and it will be seen in connection with other examination findings and factors, in order to find the best possible treatment.

Pain in the shoulder can be felt in different ways. The symptoms can occur acutely, as a result of a trauma or overload. Other times they develop over time. The middle back, thoracic spine and neck will often become stiff and painful in accordance with the shoulder problem.

Very often it is possible to get help to improve the problem. This can be done by gaining a greater understanding of the pain picture, help to improve functionality/mobility via treatment, help with exercises, or sometimes help with further referrals.
