Dizziness

Dizziness occurs when the body's ability to maintain balance does not function optimally. The experience you get is often that the head or the surroundings are in motion. Statements such as; it's like riding a merry-go-round or being on a boat is more concrete, and refers to a movement illusion called vertigo.

Dizziness affects the working part of the population, the elderly and children. Between 11 and 23% of the population seem to experience vertigo in one form or another. Statistics show that the proportion increases with increasing age and more women than men are affected.

Dizziness can be caused by a number of different conditions and diseases. Almost all diseases of the nervous system and many diseases of the musculoskeletal system can cause poor balance. However, dizziness alone is rarely a sign of serious illness as this brings with it other symptoms in addition. Dizziness can occur as a reaction to, for example, physical inactivity, stress, tension, anxiety and depression.
